Affinity Plus spreads kindness across Minnesota Monday, Oct. 9, during fifth-annual
September 29, 2017
ST. PAUL, Minn. (Sept. 28, 2017) – In celebration of the fifth anniversary of Plus It Forward Day, more than 500 Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union employees across Minnesota will step away from their branches and offices Monday, Oct. 9, to spend a full day spreading kindness.
Employees will spread out in teams across their communities as they share kindness – an essential part of Affinity Plus’ mission and core values.
“Being kind is simple and easy, but it can have profound reach and impact,” said Dave Larson, Affinity Plus president/CEO. “Each year, our hope is that by scattering kindness, more kindness will result – whether you’re a giver who keeps on giving, or a receiver who wants to Plus It Forward and share kindness with someone else.
“Plus It Forward Day has become an amazing circle of generosity and gratitude we’ve seen grow every year for five years,” Larson said.
This year, Affinity Plus will make a difference by:
- working with local non-profits, including Habitat for Humanity, to build housing for community members;
- joining together at the Minnesota State Veteran’s Hospital to host a luncheon and provide volunteer support in a sandwich-making service project and other activities;
- partnering with food banks and food shelves to pack food and provide meals for local residents;
- performing park clean-up and maintenance;
- volunteering at local schools and nursing homes;
- building care packages for local homeless shelters;
- bringing coffee, treats and lunch to local police and firefighters;
- doing random gestures of thanks, giving and kindness.
As Plus It Forward Day impacts Minnesota communities, it also gives purpose beyond work to Affinity Plus employees.
“Plus It Forward Day is one of my favorite days of the year, and it’s so rewarding to give back in this way,” said Kelly Nokk, member advisor I supervisor. “It’s powerful to support our communities by giving of our time, and I appreciate being able to work alongside my coworkers outside of the office.”
FEDERAL HOLIDAY BECOMES DAY OF KINDNESS
Affinity Plus founded Plus It Forward Day in 2013 as a day to scatter kindness in many of the Minnesota communities in which it has branches, call centers and support-staff offices.
Each year on Columbus Day (also known as Indigenous Peoples Day), Affinity Plus’ 500+ employees dedicate eight hours to volunteerism. Since 2013, Plus It Forward Day has elevated its core cooperative business principles of people helping people and active community engagement.
In 2015, Plus It Forward Day grew to include 14 credit unions in the day’s events. In 2016, it expanded further to include 25 credit unions. In recognition of the growth, partnership and impact, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton proclaimed Monday, Oct. 16, 2016, Plus It Forward Day in the State of Minnesota.
In 2017, Affinity Plus has partnered with the Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) to rebrand the event as CU Forward Day to include an even-larger group of credit unions, further growing the impact on Minnesota communities.
